Here’s something to think about…
We all like a bit of a natter from time to time.
Not necessarily the full-on chit-chat you might expect from a Gossip’s Anonymous coffee morning (that’s not a thing btw, I just made it up)!
I’m talking about those casual conversations you have where it feels good to share.
Nothing wrong with that of course and having a good old chinwag with mates or loved ones can often seem like the best way to give yourself a bit of a lift, especially when dealing with the day-to-day dogshit we’re all subjected to in the 21st century.
However, if you’re thinking of starting a business, there’s a very good chance you may be talking too much!
Let me explain…
The driving reason behind why I created The Cash Trail was to provide a valuable resource for like-minded people who think a little differently, those of us who aren’t just happy putting up with ‘our lot’ in life!
Now for as long as I can remember, I always felt if other people could be successful, why can’t I?
It’s a question that can really test you and sometimes leave you disheartened, with all kinds of doubts bouncing around inside your head!
And this is why I wanted to share an extremely important lesson I learned the hard way.
I’m talking about talking!
You see, when it comes to your vision of making a fortune on the internet, it’s pretty hard to convince someone you’re going to be successful if you haven’t done it already…
… but it’s only natural you want to tell people about it!
Trust me, this can be a big mistake!
I learnt from experience…
If you talk to the wrong people, it can literally kill your chance of success before you even start!
The thing is, there are two fundamental aspects of human nature that will piss on your bonfire if you don’t deal with them straight away.
Firstly, if you openly talk about your ‘big plans’, you’re effectively (albeit subconsciously) revealing you’ve got no confidence in yourself. Essentially, you’re LOOKING for approval without realising it, and that’s not a good place to start.
Secondly, and this is probably the more important of the two, most people accept their ‘station’ in life and are very comfortable staying there.
They’re also happy as long as others around them are at about the same level (or preferably slightly lower), which means, if you talk to them about your dreams of the future, they’ll rarely give you the encouragement you’re looking for!
This really became apparent to me when I was merely thinking about giving up my optical business.
Hoping for support, I thought I’d discuss it with family and friends before taking the plunge.
I’d tell them how I hated my ‘job’ and wanted to change my life by doing something different.
Well guess what!
Rather than getting the praise and words wishing me luck, I was shocked by all the negativity I received instead.
They thought I was living in a fantasy world and I was met with stories about mysterious friends who “tried that and lost everything”.
Or they’d say things like, “that’ll never work”, or “you’ve got a great job, you should be happy with what you’ve got”.
These were people who loved and cared for me, but were wishing me a life of misery!
Sadly, when you encounter this kind of negativity, it rubs off and you can’t help doubting yourself, or your dreams.
What’s more, when this happens, rather than exploring further, you can easily slip back to your old routine where, let’s face it, you’re most comfortable, and before you know it you’re back in a rut, making all the same excuses, emphasised by those around you who are happy for you to remain exactly where you are!
This is what I did for almost 30 years and boy, what a mistake it was!
Now, here’s the thing…
Why should you listen to these people?
What have they done in life that they can convince you with absolute authority they know what’s best and that what you want is just a pipe-dream?
Are they wealthy themselves?
Of course not!
If they were they’d be encouraging you to “go for it” and not look back, rather than spouting words of warning.
Highly successful people have a number of traits that set them apart but one thing they ALL have in common is goals and they’ll not let others stop them from achieving them.
This is how you need to think and the first step to a freer life is either to keep your plans to yourself…
Or…
… ONLY discuss them with trusted advisers and partners who are already as successful as YOU want to be.
So if you can’t talk about it, what do you do?
It’s simple, just get on with it!
Whatever it is you’re planning, take the first steps and get going.
If other ‘normal’ people find out what you’re up to and try to dismiss it (especially family or friends), just accept their point of view and then ignore them (nicely of course, but do ignore them)!
If they say you’re a dreamer, you’re unrealistic, that kind of thing, it means you’ve talked too much already and wasted your energy.
As I said at the beginning of this update, it’s pretty hard to convince someone you can make your living online if you haven’t done it yet, so don’t even try (you’ll have enough to deal with so the last thing you want is uninvited negativity)!
In my case it wasn’t until I went to a seminar being held by a multi-millionaire marketer that the change really came for me.
He asked his audience what stops most people from breaking out of their comfort zone?
He then went on to ask us, who would we rather listen to, ‘your mate down the pub’ who’s on £20,000 per year or him who’s made £5,000,000 in the last 20 months or so?
The answer was obvious!
Luckily, I took the plunge and sold my optical practice anyway and never once regretted it.
Now I never discuss what I’m up to with unsuccessful people and if asked I just gloss over the subject.
However, I’ve also made it my business to get acquainted with some very wealthy individuals (including that multi-millionaire who I now consider a personal friend) and by doing this it’s amazing how much more I’ve achieved.
Success does breed success, so make sure you know which path you want to take and completely shut off all the negativity around you.
And then go for it!
Who’s Jeff Cowtan? Copywriter, occasional blogger and fledgling YouTuber! As long as I can remember I felt if other people could be successful, why can’t I?! It’s why I love helping others with the same mindset as me to break away from convention and realise they don’t have to trade time for fixed amounts of money, in order to get where they want to be!
