Why you need a background removal tool

We’ve all seen web pages that are cluttered with pictures and jam packed full of unending blocks of text.

You can only imagine the designers of these sites were convinced the abundance of imagery and written prose would have the viewers come flocking.

Unfortunately in general the opposite is true!

Faced with visually crowded pages, virtually all of us find them harder to read and invariably switch off and search out something that’s easier to digest.

In fact one of the first things all decent copywriters will tell you, if you want your words to get read, you need to keep paragraphs short (… ideally one to three sentences) and have plenty of white space between them.

And it’s the same with images!

Of course when I refer to white space it depends on the colour of the background but the principle is the same, space between paragraphs and around images is paramount for readability.

When to use a background removal tool

Obviously not all images need their backgrounds removed but when a ‘white’ background picture is used at the right time, it can have a HUGE impact on your reader’s experience, in a positive way!

Unfortunately, up until now this has required a certain level of skill in using image editing software such as Photoshop or other similar programmes.

But not any more!

Here’s how you can do it quickly, simply and for free!

Step #1

Go to pixlr.com.

Once on the homepage, scroll all the way down to the bottom and you’ll see a link that says ‘Remove Background’ under the Products menu.

Step #2

Click on this link and you’ll be taken to the following page.

The next bit is self-explanatory.

Click on the OPEN IMAGE link and then browse to the location on your computer where the image you want the background removed from is stored.

Step#3

Click the image and you’ll instantly be taken to a page where you need to select the pixel size of the final image you require.

Step #4

Once you’ve selected the size, click apply.

And that’s it!

You’ll be presented with an image with the background removed already.

Step #5

If you’re happy with the result, you simply download the image and save it to your computer as a PNG file.

Now depending on the complexity and contrast of the background that’s been removed, sometimes you will need to fine tune the result before this final step.

If that’s the case just click on the FINE-TUNE button and you’ll be shown a control panel that will enable you to make any adjustments necessary.

It’s actually all very intuitive.

Slide the ‘Hint Removed‘ button across to see a transparent view of what’s been removed for reference and then …

If too much background has been removed simply click the KEEP button and use the brush cursor to go over the area you want recovered.

And magically, it’ll be restored!

Obviously if not enough background has been removed just click the REMOVE button and use the brush cursor to effectively ‘rub it out’!

It’s just a case of playing around with the controls until you get the result you’re looking for.

Be careful though with the ‘Reset’ button because this will restore the picture to how it was originally and then you have to use the controls to remove the background manually.

That said, if you do find yourself in this position, the whole process is so quick that you can literally start again and be back to this spot in less than 15 seconds so it’s no big deal!

Finally, once you’re happy, de-select the Hint removed toggle and download your final image.

Step #6

Use it in any way you want!

Because the resultant PNG image has a transparent background you can use it on any background you choose.

So in conclusion

In a nutshell this is a fabulous free tool that will save you so much time and effort.

The whole thing from start to finish takes less than a minute which means you’re not wasting valuable time which could be better spent on other things!
